How was your weekend? Did you manage to avoid the showers? Or did you get soaked?
The weather this weekend has been has been a bit mixed, to say the least and that makes decision making a challenge. Now, I don't know about you, but sometimes I can find myself going around in circles when it comes to having to make choices or decisions, especially when i'm not clear on what the differences are.
You hear terms and words being branded around and after a while they all start to merge into the same thing and you end up confused not clear on the differences!
Recently, I found myself experiencing this a few months back, when I was buying a new car. I knew the make and model I wanted but then there were 3 different styles with support options and e-packages that came with said vehicle!
Overload and overwhelm ensued!
I found it hard to chose! But I did in the end!
During a recent discovery call I realised this connfusion is not exclusive to buying a new car! I was having a lovely discovery call with a lady, who is now a client, whereby she asked me what is the difference, between a Coach, Mentor and a Counsellor.
Great question.
So I thought it might be helpful to detail, just incase it's a question you've been pondering...
✨ Coach vs Mentor vs Counsellor – What’s the Difference? ✨
💡 What is a Coach?
- Focuses on your future.
- Helps you set clear goals and create a strategy to achieve them.
- A coach will not tell you what to do.
- Think of a coach as someone who gives you tools, frameworks, and accountability so you can move forward faster.
➡️ Example: You want to get fitter, feel more confident, or pivot your career. A coach will help you design the plan and keep you on track.
💡 What is a Mentor?
- Shares their experience and wisdom.
- A mentor has “walked the path” before you and guides you with insights, encouragement, and perspective.
- Think of a mentor as the supportive hand on your shoulder who says, “I’ve been there, here’s what worked for me, and here’s what could work for you.”
➡️ Example: You’re feeling stuck, life isn't what you expected, and you want someone to show you what’s possible and inspire you to take bold steps.
💡 What is a Counsellor?
- Focuses on your past and present.
- They help you explore emotions, heal wounds, and process challenges like grief, trauma, or anxiety.
- Think of a counsellor as someone who creates a safe space to untangle what’s weighing you down so you can find emotional healing.
➡️ Example: You’re struggling with unresolved pain or mental health challenges that you need to talk through before you can move forward.
✨ In short:
- Counsellors help you heal your past.
- Coaches help you build your future.
- Mentors walk beside you, sharing lived experience to inspire and guide you.
Now, I belive there is also another role that provides even greater support, advice and empowers to you be the person you want to be or are aspiring to be. This is a GUIDE. Whilst this might seem a little unconventional a guide is someone who not only helps you, create a strategy, build your "new" future, they also walk beside you, hold you accountable and will be there to "guide" you on your journey.
They understand the, journey is the destination.
September is the month of transition, the summer is behind us and the transition to autum begins. It's the start of hunkering down in readiness for the "Season of Hibernation", and we know winter is just around the corner.
The activies that were enjoyed in the summer start to drift and activity/movement starts to slow down, with excuses like "the nights are drawing in", "it's cold", "I can't be bothered" etc, take hold.
Sound familiar??
