When my strength broke open ...

I didn’t realise how weak I’d become until the day I tried to pull a heavy box from the top shelf.

Nothing dramatic happened, it didn’t fall, I didn’t fall, but the strain that shot through my shoulder felt like a warning flare. And as I stood there, staring at the box, a truth washed over me: my strength wasn’t just fading physically… it was slipping mentally too.

Menopause had crept into my life quietly, draining muscle, shifting balance, lowering energy. I didn’t know then that from 50 onwards, women can lose up to 10% of their muscle mass per decade, or that bone density can drop by as much as 20% in the years around menopause.

I only knew that everyday tasks were beginning to feel heavier and that my confidence was disappearing with them.

A few weeks later, I walked into a gym hoping to “fix” myself, but the moment I stepped inside, I froze. Rows of machines I didn’t recognise. People who looked like they belonged. And me, feeling every ounce of self-doubt and every wobble in my body.

I hovered near the dumbbells pretending to stretch, even though all I wanted to do was run.

It wasn’t the gym that scared me, it was the idea that I was behind, that I should have started years ago, that maybe it really was too late. But something inside me whispered that strength doesn’t begin in your muscles, it begins in your mind.

Then, when I finally picked up a small weight, nothing magical happened on the outside, but something shifted internally. That one rep opened a door. Not to physical power, but to possibility.

It became a moment of mental permission, permission to begin, permission to take up space, permission to rebuild a version of myself I thought I’d lost.

And this is the part I want you to feel in your bones: midlife is not the time to shrink. It’s the time to strengthen. Strength becomes your armour, your protection against injury, your stability, your independence, your ability to move freely and confidently for decades ahead.
